The Tracks4Africa Traveller’s Atlas is printed in A3 size, weighs 2.42kg, has a hard laminated cover, ring bound for ease of use and printed on thicker than normal paper to ensure durability.
This Atlas covers ten Southern African countries and specifically guides self-drive travellers. It includes Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Eswatini, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, ensuring you navigate seamlessly across borders.

The new Tracks4Africa atlas also features a brand new canvas cover.
Apart from being roomier to accommodate the expanded atlas, the zipper has been upgraded to be more rugged and easier to open.
Plastic sleeves inside the cover allow the atlas to be operated while permanently fitted inside the canvas covering.
In addition, the cover includes a handy inside document pouch.
Please note that the old canvas cover will not fit the new atlas.
Our second edition atlas is substantially thicker than the first edition and includes many more pages of detailed maps.
Road coverage:
- This Tracks4Africa Atlas is designed for overland travel and compiled from the same data used on our famous GPS maps. Use it for trip planning or on the road as a companion for your GPS navigation system.
- The detailed road network covers 518 350km.
- Additionally, all major and secondary routes display distances and travel times on the 1:1 000 000 and 1:500 000 maps.
- Each country page features a table with the times and distances between major towns.

The first section of the Tracks4Africa Atlas includes valuable travel information about each of the ten countries. I missed the first edition and always longed for a next edition. This is really much different from digital and paper maps. I ordered the protection cover and am glad I did, as the book may be inadvertently damaged due to its weight. Some of the names are very faint. For example, Wapadsnek and Eseljagpoort on page 41 is difficult to read. A slightly darker font would be helpful. The large lettering/numbering in red of distance and time on minor roads would possibly declutter open areas. Depending on colourblindness, I would prefer the icon for police to be in blue and others that are in red (ATM, Bank and Forex) by placing A, B, and F in the block. Repeating the legend on p 26 would also be helpful. This is really a good investment. Congratulations on a superb product.

The Atlas is a great tool to form part of the planning on a tour. From there it is plotting it on the GPS with T4A maps and using the guideapp on your phone for quick reference. We use the paper maps to align everyone on the tour on the where we need to go. Although it is packaged very nicely with the sleeve I will most probably not take it on a tour due to the A3 size.

However, some suggestions for improvements when the next revision is due include: Degrees of Lat/Long in the margins to verify where you are on the page; Page headings of the country/region the page refers to; names of smaller towns/villages, particularly in the south-western parts of Zimbabwe (even the latest digital version of T4A doesn’t have them) – two examples of such villages are Ndolane and Chefunye. Google Maps and local people were what guided us to our destination on a recent trip from Ndolane to Tsholotsho! We will send you GPS co-ordinates for these places for the next edition (maybe discounted for contributors?!)

This is a great way to get an overall view and orientate yourself before going into detail on the GPS, Google Maps, or whatever electronic wizardry is utilized. Enjoy the scale, distance/time indicator on the various roads, and handy bits of other related info supplied. Already found lots of little off-the-beaten-track roads to go and explore right here in our “backyard”.
Plus the cover is a sure way to keep it looking good well beyond its next update.

The detail is good and the links between the paper and the internet work well. I.e. the names in the Atlas are the same as the internet -this makes planning easier. I have used the 2017 edition for many years in conjunction with the Garmin T4A maps. I like to have a paper map with me always. The old edition had an issue with the East coast and i found the lack of overlaps hard to use (especially page 82, when moving to P55, 61, 65 and/or 71). The soft cover on the old one was also hard to use in a car when on my lap and the dashbaord, and usually the atlas folded and fell out of the canvas cover.
The NEW ATLAS is fantastic and addresses/fixes all of these issues, better layout, bigger scale, more sensible page moves and a good overlap between pages. The hard atlas cover fits into the new canvas outer so the map cannot fold, or fall out when propped up on the dashboard.
A great atlas, not just for southern Africa, but even areas you know well in south Africa, at a good price and well worth the wait to get it.
i still will use the T4A Garmin maps, but enjoy the new Atlas in combination with them.
