Cannot automatically launch Google Earth (or Pro) when selecting “View in Google Earth” in Mapsource or Basecamp

If you experience a problem with the function “view in google earth” when using MapSource or BASECAMP. The problem being that it does not always work, or that MapSource/BASECAMP cannot find Google earth, especially when Google Earth Pro is installed.

The problem is that Google Earth/Google Earth Pro has not registered properly on your computer. You can try to install an older/earlier version of Google Earth, or alternatively try to rectify the problem following the following steps: (ie. please note you can follow these steps at your own risk)

Solution:

You need to run a few steps to tell your computer where your Google Earth has bee installed so it will open it automatically in future when trying to open it from BASECAMP or MapSource.

Follow these steps carefully:

  1. You have to open/run your command prompt on your pc with administrator privileges.

      On Windows 10 for example:

        To find your command prompt:

Take the cursor to the bottom left corner and right-click to open the WinX menu.

Select Command Prompt (Admin) to open with administrator privileges.

If you can only see the normal Command Prompt – then right click on that and open it as administrator.

      On Windows 7 for example:

Click Start, click All Programs, and then click Accessories.

Right-click Command prompt, and then click Run as administrator.

If the User Account Control dialog box appears, confirm that the action it displays is what you want, and then click Continue.

  1. Go to the route “C:” directory in the command prompt:

To get to route “C:” directory: Type cd.. (ie. Which means “change directory”) until you are in the route C directory:

From the Command Prompt choose one of the following command lines as applicable and press ENTER: (ie. Just copy the line applicable to you and paste it into your command prompt line as per image example further below – it is critical to use the double quotes).

If you have the non-Pro Google Earth version in Windows 7, 8.x, and 10 then run:

    “C:Program Files (x86)GoogleGoogle Earthclientgoogleearth.exe” /RegServer

If you have the Pro Google Earth version in Windows 7, 8.x, and 10 then run:
“C:Program Files (x86)GoogleGoogle Earth Proclientgoogleearth.exe” /RegServer

OR (ie. depending on where you Google Earth Pro has been installed)

    “C:Program FilesGoogleGoogle Earth Proclientgoogleearth.exe” /RegServer

If you have the Pro Google Earth version in XP then run:
“C:Program FilesGoogleGoogle Earth Proclientgoogleearth.exe” /RegServer

If you have the non-Pro Google Earth version in XP then run:
“C:Program FilesGoogleGoogle Earthclientgoogleearth.exe” /RegServer (Google Earth in XP)

The command you put into your command prompt must be exactly as in the examples. If not, you will get an error that there is an invalid directory. This will not cause any harm. It just won’t work.

This solution works great to automatically launch Google Earth (or Pro) when you select to “View in Google Earth from the View menu in MapSource or BASECAMP.
