Product Description
The Atlas is printed in A3 size, weighs 2.42kg, has a hard laminated cover, ring bound for ease of use and printed on thicker than normal paper to ensure durability.
This Atlas covers ten countries in Southern Africa and is specifically aimed at self-drive travellers. The countries included are: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Eswatini, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Bigger coverage than ever before:
- 1:4m maps for Southern and Eastern Africa – ideal for macro planning.
- 1:1m maps for Southern Africa, covering the following countries: Angola, Botswana, eSwatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia,
South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. - 1:500k maps for South Africa, Malawi, most part of Zambia and the area around Moremi/Chobe in Botswana.

The new atlas also features a brand new canvas cover. Apart from being roomier to accommodate the expanded atlas, the zipper has been upgraded to be more rugged and easier to open. Plastic sleeves inside the cover allow the atlas to be operated while permanently fitted inside the canvas covering. The cover also features a handy document pouch on the inside.
Please note that the old canvas cover will not fit the new atlas.
Our second edition atlas is substantially thicker than the first edition and includes many more pages of detailed maps.
Road coverage:
- This Atlas is designed for overland travel and compiled from the same data used on our famous GPS maps. Use it for trip planning or on the road as a companion for your GPS navigation system.
- The detailed road network covers 518 350km.
- All major and secondary routes feature distances and travel times (1m and 500k maps only).
- Each country page features a table with the times and distances between major towns.
Vital information needed for planning an extended self-drive trip:
- Per country information includes legal requirements for your vehicle, road conditions, traffic rules, signals used by locals as well as general tips such as fuel availability.
- Comprehensive information of what you need to transit borders.
- Featuring 127 border posts with opening times.
Valuable information while on the road:
This Atlas is jam-packed with as much detail as possible on protected areas, major and minor attractions, places to stay and activities. You can also see which services like fuel, bank/ATM, shopping, restaurant, hospital, police or auto repair are available in each town.
The Atlas features 223 map pages with the same trusted map detail for which Tracks4Africa is renowned.
Map features include:

This is a great set of maps of southern Africa for route planning. I can see that it has been well-researched and it is definitely well-made. The only thing that is preventing me from giving it 5 stars is the lack of latitude/longitude markings along the edges of the maps. I would find these useful as a cross-check during planning to what my GPS gives me and, in a pinch, I’d be able to use the maps in the field with only GPS coordinates.

I saw this Atlas with a friend in Cape Town and very soon our current roadmaps/roadmap books looked very tired!!
I bought us one, as we travel across the subcontinent probably every 18months and have learnt that you cannot rely on a GPS alone, you HAVE TO HAVE a paper backup.
We cannot wait to use ours in real-life, since we bought another friend at Atlas as a gift, for their imminent (virgin) Maun/Sossusvlei tour.
I never realised what a difference a usable (but also larger and easier to read when you grow a little older) map book will make to our travelling.

Start with paper then bring in the tech!
This is a great way to get an overall view and orientate yourself before going into detail on the GPS, Google Maps, or whatever electronic wizardry is utilized. Enjoy the scale, distance/time indicator on the various roads, and handy bits of other related info supplied. Already found lots of little off-the-beaten-track roads to go and explore right here in our “backyard”.
Plus the cover is a sure way to keep it looking good well beyond its next update.

There is just something about paper maps that allow you to see the trip planning as a whole. The atlas is great for seeing this macro view. The detail is good and the links between the paper and the internet work well. I.e. the names in the Atlas are the same as the internet -this makes planning easier. We have had the original Atlas for some years and loved it. We have a campsite in Limpopo and we would always carry it down when going to chat to foreign (and even local) travellers – so many of whom don’t have paper maps! I have used the 2017 edition for many years in conjunction with the Garmin T4A maps. I like to have a paper map with me always. The old edition had an issue with the East coast and i found the lack of overlaps hard to use (especially page 82, when moving to P55, 61, 65 and/or 71). The soft cover on the old one was also hard to use in a car when on my lap and the dashbaord, and usually the atlas folded and fell out of the canvas cover.
The NEW ATLAS is fantastic and addresses/fixes all of these issues, better layout, bigger scale, more sensible page moves and a good overlap between pages. The hard atlas cover fits into the new canvas outer so the map cannot fold, or fall out when propped up on the dashboard.
A great atlas, not just for southern Africa, but even areas you know well in south Africa, at a good price and well worth the wait to get it.
i still will use the T4A Garmin maps, but enjoy the new Atlas in combination with them.
